About
Inspiration
The “here” of I Was Here is an honest look at the history of place, uncovering the truth of a People’s contribution to the founding of our Country.
The project began in 2016 in Lexington, Kentucky—home to Cheapside, the site of the largest auction of the enslaved west of the Allegheny Mountains. Artist Marjorie Guyon has built a diverse and talented team to engage communities using innovative techniques like transparent tapestries, augmented reality experiences, and projections to display the powerful imagery of contemporary African Americans standing in the gap as representative of their ancestors.
